Old Catton Society
The Old Catton Society was
founded in 1984 following the
designation of a Conservation
Area for the village centre.
As a member of the Council for
the Protection of Rural England,
the Civic Trust, and as an
affiliate of the Norfolk
Society, the Old Catton Society
aims to secure the preservation
and protection of the village
environment, especially through
the monitoring of development
proposals.
We also support the upkeep of
the village by drawing the
attention of the Parish Council
to areas needing attention. From
time to time we will also
finance a small project. We are
planning to add to our
publications by producing
pamphlets about the historic
houses past and present in Old
Catton.
We have eleven meetings a year
with a variety of speakers and
outings of historical interest.
Another primary activity, and
one which attracts a lot of
interest, is the setting up and
maintenance of an archive of
village history.
Much material came forward as a
result of an initial appeal in
the Derek James column in the
Eastern Daily Press. Building on
this, the Society sought further
material through interviews with
long term residents.
