Thursday 21st February -
Blessed is the world that sings; Gentle are its songs
This is the motto of the
Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod and the
message which our speaker, Mrs Celia Nelson, at our
February meeting conveyed to the members. The
illustrated talk traced the history of the International
Eisteddfod, from humble beginnings to what is now a
world event.
It all began in 1946,
when the Welsh representative for the British Council
Harold Tudor, had the idea of a concert which might
promote peace and understanding in the world through
music. He began to organise the event by encouraging the
local populace to offer free hospitality to those who
might turn up. In return they were given extra ration
books to help with the cost. The first concert took
place in 1947 on a field just outside the town, where it
still takes place today but now with a huge marquee to
hold not only the 4,000 audience but the 4,000
competitors from 52 Countries. The Choirs, Dancers and
Musicians are in age range from 6 to 60+. There is
something to please everyone’s musical tastes.
In 1949 a German Choir
made its first visit and arrived with certain anxieties
as to their reception. They were met with friendship and
received loud applause at their concert. That example
emphasises the whole ethos of the Eisteddfod.
Llangollen is small town
and is an interesting place to visit at anytime, but is
at bursting point during the Festival. The Carnival
Parade through the streets on the Monday evening with
the Competitors dressed in their national costume,
singing and dancing with fervour and delight is an
awesome sight that should be everybody’s experience. The
week finishes with a Gala Concert with a well known
artist.
Following her visit to
the Eisteddfod in 2006, Mrs Nelson became a ‘Friend’
to promote the Eisteddfod. With the use of CD and Video
she certainly did it proud and having been myself I can
whole heartedly endorse her enthusiasm for visiting the
Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod
Our AGM was held at the
beginning of the meeting. Following reports from the
Chair and Treasurer the committee was elected. The
officers remain the same Chair - Anne Jones, Vice- chair
Bernard Brock, Secretary - Judy Leggett, Treasurer John
Clarke.
